Where do I go if I have an allergic reaction?
The answer to this question really depends on the severity of the allergic reaction. If it’s serious and potentially or definitely life-threatening, then the only option is the emergency room (ER). Only they are properly equipped to handle life-threatening situations. If your allergic reaction has any of the following symptoms or serious signs, then seek immediate medical attention:
- Chest tightness or pain
- Abdominal cramping or pain
- Heart palpitations
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Vertigo, or dizziness
- Anxiety or fear
- Flushing of the face
- Nausea or vomiting
- Facial, eye, or tongue swelling
Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe, and very serious allergic reaction which can develop within seconds of being exposed to an allergen. The symptoms can be life-threatening, like swelling of the airway, a sudden and significant drop in blood pressure, and an inability to breathe. It’s absolutely necessary to seek immediate emergency medical attention if you experience anaphylaxis, as it can cause death within only 15 minutes. CPR may be necessary too.
When an allergic reaction is minor, which means non-life-threatening, it can be handled easily and quickly at urgent care. In fact, urgent care is the best place to go for minor reactions, as an appointment isn’t necessary and treatment can be done right away.
How long does it take for an allergic reaction to go away?
An allergic reaction can be quick or long-lasting, depending on factors like the severity of the symptoms. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days for the reaction to go away. It can take longer if you’re continually exposed to an allergen. Treatment, however, can decrease the duration of an allergic reaction, so it’s a good idea to be treated even if your symptoms are minor.
How is an allergic reaction treated?
A common, minor allergic reaction is typically treated with an antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Antihistamines can be found at your local pharmacy, but it may be better and quicker to go to urgent care for treatment.
If a person has a known allergy, they may have an emergency medication with them, like an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen). Epinephrine is known as a “rescue drug” because it opens up the airways and helps to raise blood pressure during a reaction. It’s possible to get an EpiPen at an urgent care clinic like ours if you need one.
